My Visit to the University of Victoria: Why UVic Should be on Your University List

As an educational consultant, I spend a lot of time helping students build university lists, compare programs, and think carefully about what they want from their post-secondary experience. While rankings and program offerings are important, I always remind students that one of the best ways to determine whether a university is the right fit is to visit the campus in person.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the University of Victoria (UVic), and I left with a greater appreciation for what makes this university such a compelling option for Canadian and international students alike.

First Impressions of the University of Victoria Campus

The first thing that struck me about the University of Victoria campus was how beautiful and peaceful it feels. Surrounded by lush greenery and just a short distance from the ocean, the campus has an atmosphere that immediately feels welcoming and conducive to learning.

Unlike some urban campuses that can feel busy and overwhelming, UVic offers a balance between being large enough to provide incredible opportunities while still maintaining a close-knit community feel. As I walked through campus, I could easily picture students studying outside, meeting friends between classes, and finding quiet spaces to recharge.

For students who value a strong sense of community and connection to nature, the University of Victoria has a lot to offer. One particularly interesting insight shared with me was that more than 75% of UVic students come from outside of Victoria. Because so many students are moving away from home and building new support systems, there seems to be a strong culture of connection and community on campus. Many students arrive looking to make friends, get involved, and find their place, creating an environment that feels especially welcoming and inclusive.

A Campus That Encourages Balance

One of the things I often discuss with students is the importance of considering lifestyle when choosing a university. Academic programs matter, but so does your day-to-day experience.

During my visit, I was struck by how intentionally UVic seems to foster balance in student life. There are countless green spaces, walking paths, and places to gather with friends or study outdoors, creating an environment that supports both academic success and well-being.

I also loved discovering some of the unique features that contribute to the student experience. The on-campus movie theatre, which screens both new releases and classic favourites for as little as $8, is such a fun and affordable way for students to unwind. Another highlight was the used textbook store, where students can buy and sell course materials at a fraction of the cost of new textbooks. These thoughtful touches may seem small, but they can make a meaningful difference in both a student’s sense of community and their overall university experience.

As someone who works with students navigating the often stressful university application process, I can appreciate the value of an environment that promotes both learning and wellness.

Exploring UVic’s Academic Opportunities

The University of Victoria programs are incredibly diverse, offering strong opportunities across the arts, sciences, business, engineering, and social sciences.

What particularly stands out about UVic is its commitment to experiential learning. The university has one of Canada’s largest co-op programs, giving students the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience while completing their degrees.

For students who learn best through hands-on experiences and want to graduate with both a degree and practical experience, this is a significant advantage.

I always encourage students to ask themselves:

  • Will this university help me explore my interests?
  • Are there opportunities to gain real-world experience?
  • Will I be supported academically and personally?

From my visit, UVic appears to answer “yes” to all three.

Why Visiting a University Campus Matters

I often tell students that there is something incredibly powerful about stepping onto a campus and asking yourself one simple question:

Can I see myself here?

No website, virtual tour, or brochure can fully answer that question for you.

A campus visit allows you to:

  • Experience the atmosphere and culture firsthand.
  • Picture your daily life as a student.
  • Learn about residence and student services.
  • Explore academic buildings and facilities.
  • Understand the surrounding community.

For many students I work with, visiting a campus either confirms that it’s the right fit or helps them realize they should continue exploring other options.

Both outcomes are valuable.

The City of Victoria Is Part of the Experience

Choosing a university also means choosing where you’ll live for the next four or more years.

One of the biggest takeaways from my visit was how much the city itself enhances the student experience. Victoria offers an incredible combination of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and a vibrant downtown.

Students can enjoy:

  • Beautiful beaches and waterfront trails
  • Coffee shops and local restaurants
  • Outdoor activities year-round
  • A mild climate compared to many other Canadian cities
  • A welcoming and student-friendly atmosphere

For students who are looking for a university experience that combines strong academics with an exceptional quality of life, Victoria deserves serious consideration.

My Advice to Prospective UVic Students

If the University of Victoria is on your university list, I strongly encourage you to visit if you can.

Take an official campus tour. Sit in a common area. Walk around the residence buildings. Explore downtown Victoria. Pay attention to how you feel while you’re there.

The right university is about more than prestige or rankings. It’s about finding a place where you can grow academically, personally, and socially.

After visiting UVic, I left understanding why so many students are drawn to this university. It offers beautiful surroundings, strong academic opportunities, a supportive community, and a lifestyle that many students are seeking.

And perhaps most importantly, it feels like a place where students can truly thrive.
